The protective shell of a microfloppy diskette features a small write-protect notch. This hole in the corner of the diskette shell has a small tab which can be moved to cover it. Doing so renders the disk unwriteable. In this configuration, the disk drive will ignore any command to write data to the microfloppy diskette.
